And the adventure continues…..

The Abu Dhabi airport….my first encounter of what is to come….tons of people in a small room fighting to get their luggage, kids running around wild, and people taking that 1 inch of room that you left open between you and the person beside you.  I think all the women put Thomas Gamboa to work that night, he was our hero, he would grab our luggage off the carousel as we pointed it out….we all worked as a team to watch other EMT kids, pass luggage back to whomever it belonged to and watch each other’s carts and purses so we could point to luggage and maneuver.
After we finally had most of our luggage (some people were still waiting for theirs, but we were told if we had our luggage to leave with the group) we had to fight people walking in front of you while you’re pushing a trolley full of luggage, stopping in front of you as you’re pushing said trolley, and a moving sidewalk type thing that has enough of an angle that your luggage falls off the front if you’re not prepared….good times my friends, good times.
The bus to the hotel…omg! Luckily one of the experienced teachers warned about the bus. The busses come equipped with 2 seats on 1 side a middle aisle and 1 seat on the other side….with a seat that flips down to fill the space in the aisle…..and I was near the back.  Yaaaaa I’m pretty sure that wouldn’t be OSHA approved…lol…but we made it safe and sound to the hotel.
We arrived at the Grand Millenium hotel in downtown Abu Dhabi…niceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.  But of course we couldn’t have an easy check in….They had all the new teachers set up at a special table to check in with the travel agency and then get our key for our rooms and were told our luggage would be brought to our rooms when it arrived (it was thrown into a truck that followed..not my first choice of options but oh well…when in Rome). So I received my room key, entered the elevator, found the door to my room. There was no slidy thing like in the States to stick the key card in to unlock the door…lol. Soooo being a problem solver (with no sleep) I started holding the key to everything on the door..lol….nothing…lol. Then I see a little yellow light to my right on the wall, but it was too dark to really see what it was so I start holding the key to that. As I accidentally hit a button I hear a bell inside the room, and then a click on the door unlocking it…success! As I walk into the room, here comes a man walking towards me from the room…..ummm, really? This is happening to me again…Jekyll Island part deux! Luckily for me and him, he was dressed…lol. Well Matt wasn’t there for me to laugh and back out of the room this time, so I had to apologize and say sorry they gave me this room and key…close the door behind me and go back downstairs.  When I arrived it’s almost like they didn’t believe me, so they told me to wait while they investigated….as I waited the luggage arrived and I pointed out mine so they marked it with tags as to where it went (lucky me!). Finally the hotel person came to me and apologized and gave me a new key and new room number. I hit the elevators again….made it to my room, which was at the end of the hallway, and being an expert now on the key, held my key to the pad….NOTHING!...seriously???? Soooo I trekked back downstairs, they rekeyed my card and took me back upstairs…finally in my room!!! It was veryyyy nice!
By this time I was starving, I mean fall on the floor someone throw me a bread crumb or I’m going to die starving. I found the room service menu and the instructions say, just use “one touch” to order room service…..ummm, wtf is one touch???? I couldn’t find anything with one touch on it, I hit the number 1 on the phone, nope not it. I went through all the manuals for the room, nothing explaining one touch, just that you use it for everything. Yup, I had a breakdown…laid on the bed exhausted and crying….after a few minutes of getting that out of my system, I started looking on the phone, finally I see on the menu one touch…friggin really? So room service was ordered, food was ate, and I facebooked my partner in crime Debra that I had met at the Chicago airport who was stuck at the Abu Dhabi airport waiting on her luggage. She had finally received and was at the hotel, she came up and we chatted for a few.
The next day Debra, Thomas, and Janell ventured out, we found the mall right next door (soooo convient and HUGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!) and bought a few necessities.  The next few days were spent doing things for ADEC and getting situated in the country and Debra trying to kill me (she opted for an adventure walking in the heat)a…lol! As well as seeing some beautiful places, going to Ikea, and visiting a few other malls.
Within a week we received our placements and would have to leave to go to them. I was placed in a city in the Western region of Al Gharbia called Madinat Zayed. But before we could move in to our accommodations we had to relocate to a hotel an hour plus away…ugh! Soooooo checking into the new hotel….the adventure continues…..There was about 15 of us checking in to our rooms, I was about 4th or so in line, they asked for the copies of our passports and entry visas to make copies and start the process, the first 4 of us gave the guy making copies the items and he placed them on the desk next tto the lady doing check in. She got through with the first 3 and looked at me, I told her she had my copies right there (pointing down next to her), she looked at me, then to another teacher, took their information, gave it to the guy to make copies and handed them a room key. When she got through she looked at me and I told her the same thing, she did exactly the same thing again….She did this over and over and my voice got stern and louder each time, and to say my face was starting to look a little pissed off is putting it mildly…finally I was the last person, I broke down, I looked at her (trying not to cuss) and said with gritted teeth…YOU HAVE MY STUFF RIGHT THERE! I started to cry again…I’m not a crier, but I was done and exhausted! She looked down, picked up my paper and said oh sorry miss for the miscommunication….ummm, what miscommunication????? Buttt anyways I finally got my key and headed to where the sign said my room should be. I get to the other side of the doorways and the room numbers are in the 200’s, mine is in the 100’s…wtf??? Luckily I see a porter who was coming down the hall and he asked if he could help, I told him I was trying to find my room and told him the number. He looked a little bewildered, repeated the number to me and I said yes. He tells me he thinks that room is already occupied…..say it isn’t sooooooo, really??? Again????? So we went together to the room (which I would have never found on my own) and knocked on the door..yup one of the other teachers was already in there…..ugh! So back to the front desk….the lady who checked me in face went pale when she saw me coming. I remained calm, all I could do was laugh at this point….twice in one country…who would have thunk it…lol. Finally got to my room and in…..A couple of us received a message late that night that we had to show for work the next day….omg I was tired, but knew I needed to go. So began the long drive back and forth and the added stress of trying to get situated in a new country with no car and nothing near by.

Ok, so I suck at posting..lol

I promise it hasn't been on purpose....just the whirlwind that is ADEC and Abu Dhabi.

Getting everyone caught up...if I can remember everything..lol

Well woke up early on Aug 19th to have the Golden Ticket announcement and instructions on what to do......My flight leaving the next day.....talk about craziness and running around. Luckily Matt took off and tried to keep me sane and helped as much as he could. Funny how you know it can come any day and you're prepared as much as you can be at that point then BAM the email is here and the first thing that goes through your mind is Oh S&#t!

So we did a last meal with my family at Pappasitos...you know I had to get in them yummy fajitas before I left, right?..lol.  The next day mom and dad met Matt and me at the airport and so began my journey of what the heck is going to happen next..lol.  Remember that scene in the beginning of Airplane when the plane is passing all of the gates and the guy on the intercom is announcing that the plane is now boarding at gate 17....18....19...20 (or something like that). Well that's kind of what I felt like, within an hour or so I switched gates 3 times....seriously??? But ohhh the fun did not stop there....so boarded an hour 1/2 late I think it was...but thinking to myself...I got plenty of time to catch my connection in Chicago..no worries......wronggggggggggggggg misterrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr......we sat on the tar mac (spelling?) for another couple of hours....they were kind enough to come around and offer a cup of water...::eyeroll:: Eventually that weather cleared and we took off......landed in Chicago O' Hare...with an hour to spare (see what I did there?..lol)....still thinking ok, I got this...just gotta run! Nahhhhh, for some reason Chicago does NOT like for me to leave (I got stuck when I went up to interview for the job back in May too). What's funny is the old man next to me was trying to catch the same flight....he didn't speak a lick of english but we communicated the best we could.....I figured out that he was really going to be in trouble because he still had to visit the Etihad desk to get his boarding pass, luckily the baggage guys who checked me in at Hartsfield checked me all the way through so I had mine. Sooo anyways back to the plane. Well we're rolling to the gate and roll up to the gate...i'm still golden, i'm in row 8, I got this!...nope! At the gate the little ramp thing that connects to the plane so we can get off wont move...I sat there in disbelief...lol, really??? I started getting nervous, I did start rambling about how I had "x" amount of minutes to get to the next gate to catch my flight...even asked the flight attendant if there was a way she could call and let them know that some of us catching the connecting flight was on this plane, we're here, we're coming! Well after 30 minutes at least of them fighting with the ramp they decided to move the plane to the gate next door....I had 10 minutes...still a glimmer of hope if they called..lol me and the old man were ready to run! We got to the gate, everyone around us let us go first and we ran......we landed at terminal 3 and had to get to terminal 5....if you've ever been to this airport you can appreciate the time I made....got to security with a minute to spare....they said nope, your flight has quit boarding we won't let you pass go over to the Etihad desk. Well we (the old guy who spoke no english and me) finally found someone from Etihad, I explained to her what happened and she booked me and the old guy on the next flight out the next day which doesn't leave until 8:45pm. She also told us to go back to American Airlines and tell them to give us a hotel voucher.....so I got us squared away there and went back to American Airlines...luckily that guy didn't give us much hassle either, so we had our vouchers and went down to where you wait for the hotel shuttle...talk about a hike!! And so the adventure continues, there's no marking of where to wait for your hotel shuttle, so after looking around and asking I finally called the hotel, she told me where to be and told me shuttle should be there in about 20 minutes.....over an hour later we luckily heard a man call out the hotel and ran over to him....these folks that just walked up thought they were gonna get on...aw hells naw! I was throwing my stuff in the back of the van and loading me and the old guy up, they looked at me like I was rude, I told them I had been waiting for over an hour and there was no way I was not getting on this shuttle...guess I had a crazy enough look on my face...lol. So more stupid stuff happened, asked for a late check out...ya get 30 minutes extra...really?....but finally got to sleep and got downstairs the next day to catch the shuttle to the airport...to sittttttttttttttttt....all day long.  Once I was able to get my boarding pass and make it through security I hooked up with some other teachers on the same flight..yay! And was able to use my food vouchers for some free food...double yay!..lol. So I guess it was good that I missed my flight because I made some really good friends at the Chicago airport! Guess you could say we were kind of like the spanish brat pack (me in name..lol) Gamboa, Paiz, and Acuna roaming the streets of Abu Dhabi!!...lol.
And that gets you caught up on getting to Abu Dhabi....Sorry so wordy, just so much, and I didn't even include everything...lol

Thank goodness July is over!!!

July, you were not my friend! I can honestly say that the best thing about July was that I got out alive and in one piece!  But it seems that many of my ADEC (Abu Dhabi Educational Council) family waiting to go over have had so many issues in July, I truly hope that we were just getting all the bad stuff out of the way before we get over there!  Keep in mind we're all trying to save every penny we can because we might not get paid 4-6 weeks after arrival and some are not getting anymore paychecks here, i'm lucky I still get paid for a little bit more (however it is a teachers salary, so I use the term paid loosely..lol).

My July issues started the first friggin day of July when the guy renting my house called to say that a pipe was leaking in the basement and the air wasn't working....yaaa not a good way to start a month. Soooooo over $5000 later my house has a kickin system! (Thank you Matt for your help!!!)  Oh and he's not renewing his lease so he'll be moving out by July 31st....ugh!  Really hoping the management company finds someone soon....so far there's been a little interest but no one signing a lease..ugh!

Next Matt's van wouldn't get out of park so we had that towed to the garage, several hundred dollars later it was fixed.

Somewhere in the middle of July the "Golden Tickets" started coming out for those who have cleared Visa/Security clearances.  Talk about a dangling carrot!! Every second I checked my email praying it was an email for me saying Tiffanyyyy Acunnaaaaa...come on downnnnnnnn (In my best Price is Right voice), but it appeared to be just those who interviewed back in February...I interviewed in May...grrrrrr...So as happy as I was for them, I was sad for me.

Then one of my good friend's dad passed away suddenly, during the memorial service I get a call from Matt, his van broke down again on side of road. Sooo instead of spending time with my girls I had to go pick Matt up at the garage that the tow truck driver was dropping the van off at. A few days later we find out it's the engine....ugh! Soooo we had to buy another vehicle for Matt...I'm proud to say that he actually got something semi new, a 2013 van....::thud::: miracles do happen...lol!

And last but not least my Aunt Dot passed, which was a somewhat good thing since she was suffering so bad....so we ended July with a road trip to Virginia. It's nice seeing family but wish it would be under better circumstances!!

So July started off being a thorn in my side and really tested my patience and stress levels, but i'm hoping as bad as July was August will be that much more awesome! Some of the teachers who have arrived these past few days in Abu Dhabi have been posting pics of the hotel, their rooms, the nearby malls they're visiting....ummm, yaaaa I can't wait to suffer like they are..lol.....5 star baby!

Sooo hopefully my next blog will be that I got my Golden Ticket and then of course pics once I get over there!! Until then hopefully happy days!!!

Meeting some of my Abu Dhabi peeps!

Well yesterday one of the 2014 group of people going to Abu Dhabi, hopefully all leaving in August, had a gathering in the Atlanta area.....my goodness I believe we had the biggest gathering of all!!!  I think the final count of people to come was up to 58 (this included some with husbands and children). And hopefully this is going to be an indicator of what's to come....we all came together to make this a successful, enjoyable time.  A HUGE thanks to Ava and her husband for opening their home to everyone; helping to setup all the food as it came in, and then cleaning up after our butts after everyone left (I was probably the last one to leave and boy was it a hot mess up in that house!).

As for the people I will be with it was great to finally meet some, I only knew one person at the beginning of this journey and have met many more online, but to actually come face to face and interact was very comforting. We hugged, talked, and laugh so much during this time and I didn't even get a chance to meet everyone.  What was funny is I was the first to arrive since I was bringing the canopy, a table, and some chairs I wanted to get set up before it got busy, and Ava's husband was trying to set the sound of the background music and he asked, "is this loud enough? too loud?, and I told him it's not going to matter you've got a bunch of teachers coming together it's going to be so loud up in here!  It wasn't too long after people started arriving that Ava's husband looked at me and said, "you're not kidding about the noise!"  But everyone talking is a good thing, we found out we're alike, we're different, we're going for the same reason, we're going for different reasons....at the end of the day...we are here for each other!

As we said our goodbyes, I told everyone the same thing.....I'll see you in two weeks....at the airport...lol!! Most of us are hoping it's true...I figure if you put it out there the chances are greater!

Watch out sandbox you got some crazy folk coming from the A T L!

Brought to you by the letter P

Well since my last post I don't have any new updates on my departure. However, since then I have been packing, purging, praying, and going to physicians...lol.

Packing stuff I don't need but would like to keep for when I come back....man that's a lot o'stuff!!

Purging things that I wont use the next few years and can replace when I get back to the states.  I think of it as one last thing for Matt to trip over...lol

Praying that I leave end of July or beginning of August....this will coincide with my last paycheck from Dekalb County.  But I will have no idea when until I receive an email saying congrats you're in group (which ever 1, 2, or 3). This will give me a better idea of beginning of August or not. But I definitely won't know until I get an email from the travel agency saying here's your plane ticket and itinerary your flight leaves on (insert date).

Physicians....well trying to knock out all the check ups, tests, etc that women need to get annually....the girls are trying my patience!

Also since my last post I've had to deal with people's ignorance about where I'm going. Yes Abu Dhabi is in the middle east, however, the middle east is made up of several countries! The national past time in Abu Dhabi is shopping! There's this thing called Google, use it, do the research.....and quit worrying!...lol

The roller coaster thus far...

Well as with anything there are bumps and turns along the path to where we want to be......applying for a job in Abu Dhabi was no exception!

The hurdles:
1. Fill out the application
2. Skype/telephone interview with recruiter
3. Gathering paperwork....and stuff!
4. In person interview (and passing!)
5. Authenticating documents and sending them to the recruiter for Visa/Immigration process.
6. Waiting for the Golden Ticket (I'mmmm leaving on a jet plane......singing)
7. Passing health screening
8. Getting placement
9. Getting a good class/school

Currently I am on hurdle 5, I got most of my documents authenticated before my in person interview so that "if/when" I got a job offer I wouldn't have much to do and I wouldn't have to fork out the funds for Pro-ex to do my leg work.  So far the first hurdle was the easiest...ha!

What I have learned so far.....there is no "normal" with anything, the process and from what I hear life over in Abu Dhabi!  Even at only step 5 Insha'Allah has become the mantra!

After the next two days of packing up my classroom I will start packing, selling, storing my life here.

Well not a glamorous start...but eh, it's a start on blogging...lol
